LAMusArt Students Bring to Life the World of Dr. Seuss

Seusss 2016On Friday, July 22nd, the student cast of our 19th annual summer program, Camp MusArt, culminated their camp experience with a public performance of Seussical Jr. at the East Los Angeles College Performing Arts Center.

Parents and family, friends and the community of East Los Angeles were invited to witness the hard work, dedication, and creative expression of our students and their Teaching Artists. This year, 54 students embarked on a 5 week creative journey through the many stories and worlds of Dr. Seuss and 16 students made their stage debut!

Backed with professional scenic backdrops and stage lighting, special effects and costumes, our student cast shone in their performances.  Memorable moments included the opening number “Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!” featuring Julia Zayas (The Cat in the Hat), “Biggest Blame Fool,” and “It’s Possible.” Leads Evan Soto (JoJo) and Brianna Arias (Horton) shined in their performance of “Alone in the Universe,” while Azucena Ortega (Gertrude McFuzz) was charismatic in “The One Feather Tail of Miss Gertrude McFuzz.”

Each year, Camp MusArt invites children ages 7 to 15 to learn about and explore the world of musical theatre through daily classes in music, art, dance and drama. Over the course of 5 weeks, students experience what it’s like to produce and rehearse for a musical theatre performance that includes: auditioning and casting, music theory and singing, dance choreography, stage costuming, props and scenery, rehearsals, theatre vocabulary and etiquette.

Camp MusArt creates an environment for students – regardless of their experience in the arts – to be creative, playful, and have fun through the medium of arts education. After being together for 5 weeks, students bond with one another and become a supportive ensemble cast that delivers an incredible performance.

The camaraderie that they form also helps students understand the immense teamwork that is necessary for a performance of any kind to take place. Camp MusArt is immeasurably grateful to all of our campers’ families and friends who supported their creative journey this summer and who attended their final performance.

LAMusArt would also like to thank and recognize its amazing Camp MusArt staff, the East Los Angeles College Performing Arts Center staff, and our many volunteers. Tune in next year when we celebrate 20 years of Camp MusArt!
