Orchestra Field Trip

On Saturday November 12th, 2016 a bus full of LAMusArt’s students took a field trip to the Alex Theatre in Glendale to see the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra’s presentation of MOZART & MENDELSSOHN. The group took a bus provided by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) from the East 3rd Street facility to Glendale.

The field trip was offered to LAMusArt as part of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra’s Community Partners program which offers free concert tickets and transportation to students and community service organizations across the city. LACO initiated the Community Partners program during the Orchestra’s 40th anniversary and has maintained the program for over 7 years. All costs of providing free tickets and transportation are covered by donations. Notably, this year will mark the 20th and final season of LACO Music Director, Jeffrey Kahane.

Five generous chaperones accompanied our students, including Ensemble Director Austin Chanu. The group enjoyed an evening of thrilling orchestral music by the PROJECT Trio, conducted by Alexandre Bloch. The program consisted of performances of Mozart’s Symphony No. 38, ‘Prague’, LA-based composer Adam Schoenberg’s Scatter (West Coast premiere), and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. e, ‘Scottish’. At the end of the concert, the students and chaperones discussed the program as they were shuttled back to LAMusArt.

The field trip was a huge success and will remain a fond memory for the students in attendance, many of whom are musicians themselves. We always welcome the opportunity to show our students how art can be applied in the world outside of LAMusArt, and to expose them to the experience of live performance. LAMusArt is so grateful for the generosity of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and we are thrilled to be in partnership with such a prestigious institution concerned with engaging young students with the arts.
