Micaela Tobin

micaela“Soprano, sound artist, and teacher Micaela Tobin has an extensive background in classical voice, and currently performs contemporary opera and new music repertoire at the California Institute of the Arts under the guidance of Jacqueline Bobak. Micaela received her Bachelor of Arts in music, with a concentration in voice performance, from the Herb Albert School of Music at UCLA. There, she had the opportunity to perform as Monica from Menotti’s The Medium, Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro, and as a soloist alongside Annette Bening in UCLA Live’s professional production of Medea.

Having completed her MFA in VoiceArts at the California Institute of the Arts over the last year, Micaela composed and performed an experimental opera called Unseal Unseam, which showcased at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland for the month of August, 2016. With five-star reviews, Micaela and her team are looking to perform it in Los Angeles before the end of the year. Micaela has  been invited to perform at the “XIII Festival Internacional Musica Nueva Monterrey 2016” in Monterrey, Mexico as part of a new opera project called Dada Divas (comp. Jacqueline Bobak). Previously, Micaela performed as a vocalist in the Continuum Ensemble for REDCAT’s Portrait of Jani Christou, and the West Coast premiere of John Luther Adam’s Sila: The Breath of the World, at the 2015 Ojai Music Festival. 

An active inter-disciplinary collaborator, Micaela has worked as a vocalist and experimental sound artist in art installations such as: Graceless Ladies (Machine Project), Delta Lamenta (Eve Luckring, POST Gallery), and Debysi (Ashes/Ashes, Kira Blazek). Her vocals appear on the soundtrack of the documentary Radical Grace (dir. Rebecca Parish, comp. Heather McIntosh). Micaela currently composes and performs her own experimental music under the moniker, WBS, around the greater Los Angeles area.She is preparing to perform her own unique staging of Schoenberg’s Erwartung, and Messiaen’s song cycle, Harawi.

With her passion for teaching, Micaela has taught as a visiting artist at Inner City Arts, and currently teaches voice at Eagle Rock Music Studio and The Los Angeles Music and Art School.  For more information on Micaela’s performances and projects visit her website.
