The Los Angeles Music and Art School (LAMusArt) has always been committed to providing access to an arts education to the individuals in our community. As a school, we could not possibly achieve that great feat without aligning with local artists who serve as our students’ mentors and who drive our programming efforts. These mutual partnerships allow LAMusArt to grant opportunities for rising artists to produce original works while involving current students in the creative process.
The video encapsulates a collaboration of new artistry commissioned specifically to celebrate LAMusArt’s 70th anniversary. We are very proud to have partnered with LAMusArt alum, Jason Martin Castillo, who went on to graduate from the Berklee School of Music. Jason composed the original score and served as mentor and conductor to our Youth Orchestra ensemble. Thanks to LAMusArt’s brand new Recording Studio and Audio Recording and Engineering program, our Youth Orchestra ensemble experienced a professional live-music recording starring them.
Providing authentic and novel experiences in the arts that are applicable to real-life careers is what we, at LAMusArt, aim to achieve. Nothing brings us more joy and satisfaction than to see our local students, often branded at-risk and underprivileged, transcend those labels through their talents and artistry. It harkens back to our founder’s, Pearle Irene Odell’s, legacy of music and arts for all.
Jason Martin Castillo is a film and concert music composer. He studied guitar at the Los Angeles Music and Arts School for seven years and later received a bachelor’s degree in music composition from Berklee College of Music in Boston. Jason is now composing music for award winning films and working on network television series.
“My goal is to engage the listener on an emotional level; to tell a story or describe a feeling using not words, but sound and to explore originality and the unconventional medium of music.”
